# Swiss Residence & Visa Strategy (Work • Retirement • Family Life)

Unless you hold an EU/EFTA passport, Swiss immigration law treats you as a third-country national — whether you come from the US, the UK, Australia, Canada or elsewhere. Admission is selective and depends on your purpose and your ties. I help you choose the right permit for work, family or retirement, and prepare an application the canton can approve.

## Obtaining legal residence in Switzerland is often more complex than expected.

| Permit | What it is | Typical use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **L** | Short-term residence permit | Assignments and contracts of limited duration |
| **B** | Residence permit, renewed periodically | Employment, family reunification, retirement |
| **C** | Settlement permit, unlimited | Long-term residents; required for ordinary naturalisation |

Short visits are simpler: citizens of many countries, including the US, the UK, Australia and Canada, can visit Switzerland, part of the Schengen area, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Others need a Schengen visa. Any work or longer stay requires a permit.

## Work • Retirement • Family Life

### Work

Non-EU/EFTA nationals can be admitted as qualified professionals whose skills are hard to find on the Swiss and EU/EFTA labour market. Permits are subject to annual quotas.

For 2026: 8,500 permits for third-country nationals (4,500 B and 4,000 L), plus a separate quota of 3,500 reserved for UK nationals (2,100 B and 1,400 L).

### Retirement (55+)

People aged 55 or over can be admitted without working if they have special personal ties to Switzerland, sufficient financial means and no gainful activity in Switzerland or abroad. Ties can include earlier long stays or close relatives living in Switzerland.

### Family Life

The foreign spouse and minor children of a Swiss citizen are generally entitled to a residence permit when they live together in Switzerland. This is often the first step towards [Swiss citizenship by marriage](https://juliobvero.com/swiss-citizenship-by-marriage?hsLang=en).

**Do you also hold an EU passport?** EU/EFTA citizens benefit from the free movement agreement and face far fewer restrictions. If you have, or may be entitled to, the citizenship of an EU country, that may be the simplest route to Switzerland.

## Why your Swiss ties matter for immigration too

A Swiss parent, grandparent or spouse can change your immigration strategy. Before applying for a permit, it is worth checking whether you are already Swiss, or could become Swiss, because a citizen needs no permit at all.

- Check first whether you are Swiss [by descent](https://juliobvero.com/swiss-citizenship-by-descent?hsLang=en)
- Within ten years of losing citizenship, apply for [reinstatement](https://juliobvero.com/swiss-citizenship-by-reinstatement?hsLang=en) from abroad
- After ten years, three years of residence in Switzerland can reopen reinstatement
- Long-term residents can work towards a C permit and [naturalisation](https://juliobvero.com/swiss-citizenship-by-naturalisation?hsLang=en)

## Questions about permits

### Who issues Swiss permits?

The cantonal migration office of the canton where you will live, often with the approval of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). Practice varies from canton to canton.

### Can I look for a job in Switzerland on a visitor stay?

You can visit and attend interviews, but you cannot start working until your employer has obtained the permit for you.

### Is owning property in Switzerland enough to get a permit?

No. Property alone does not give a right to residence, and purchases by non-residents are themselves restricted.
