Swiss Citizenship Through Marriage — Beyond Bureaucracy

Marriage does not make you Swiss automatically, but it opens a faster federal procedure. Whether you live in Switzerland, the US, the UK, Australia or anywhere else, I help you meet the requirements and build a file that holds up at interview.

Eligibility Assessment Available

Swiss Citizenship by Marriage is a fast-track route available to spouses of Swiss nationals.

Living in Switzerland

You can apply if you have:

  • lived in Switzerland for a total of five years, including the year before you apply
  • been married to and living with your Swiss spouse for three years
  • integrated successfully, including language skills and no recent social assistance

A C permit is not required for this route.

Living abroad

You can apply through the Swiss embassy or consulate in your country if you have:

  • lived in a marital union with your Swiss spouse for six years
  • close ties with Switzerland

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) decides on the application.

Swiss Citizenship by Marriage While Living Abroad

For spouses living abroad, close ties are the heart of the case. Under the Ordinance on Swiss Citizenship you generally need to show that you:

  • stayed in Switzerland at least three times, for at least five days each time, in the six years before applying
  • can communicate in everyday situations in German, French or Italian (or Romansh)
  • have a basic knowledge of Swiss geography, history, politics and society
  • maintain contact with Swiss citizens, and can name people living in Switzerland who can confirm your ties
Applicants abroad are invited to an interview at the Swiss representation with their Swiss spouse. Preparation for that interview is part of my work with you.

Key Conditions

  • Both of you were foreign nationals when you married, and your spouse later became Swiss through ordinary naturalisation: the marriage route is then not available.
  • Your Swiss spouse must be alive when the application is submitted.
  • The marriage must be a genuine, stable union in which you live together. The authorities check this throughout the procedure.

A registered partnership can count towards the required period when it is converted into marriage.

The procedure step by step

  1. Eligibility check. We confirm the dates of your marriage, your periods of residence and your spouse's citizenship history.
  2. Evidence and forms. I prepare the application, the questionnaire on ties with Switzerland and the supporting documents: civil status records, criminal record extracts, references and proof of stays.
  3. Filing and interview. The file goes to SEM (in Switzerland) or to the Swiss representation (abroad), which interviews you and reports to SEM.
  4. Decision. SEM decides, after consulting the canton. A refusal can be appealed to the Federal Administrative Court, and I can advise you on that step.

Questions about marriage

Does my Swiss spouse have to come to the interview?

For applications filed abroad, yes: the Swiss representation normally invites you with your spouse, and with any children aged 12 or over included in the application.

Will my children become Swiss too?

Children of a Swiss parent are generally Swiss from birth, though children born abroad must be registered. Your own minor children can sometimes be included in your application. We check each child's situation separately.

How long does it take?

From abroad, the Swiss representation usually sends its report to SEM within twelve months, and SEM usually decides within twelve months of receiving it. A complete, well-prepared file avoids most delays.
