# Swiss Citizenship by Naturalisation — Eligibility & Process

Ordinary naturalisation is the route for long-term residents without a Swiss parent or spouse. It is one of the most demanding procedures in Europe, decided at three levels. Good planning, years before you file, makes the difference.

## Swiss citizenship by naturalisation is the main pathway for foreign residents who have built their life in Switzerland.

### 10 years of residence

Ten years living in Switzerland, including three of the five years immediately before you apply. Years spent in Switzerland between the ages of 8 and 18 count double, with at least six years of actual residence.

### A C permit

You must hold a settlement permit (C permit) when you apply and keep it until the decision. A B permit is not enough, even after ten years.

### Successful integration

Respect for public order and Swiss constitutional values, language skills, participation in economic life or education, and familiarity with Swiss living conditions.

## Language & Integration Requirements

**Language:** the federal minimum is generally B1 spoken and A2 written in a national language. Many cantons and communes set their own additional requirements, including knowledge tests.

## Three levels of decision

| Level | Role |
| --- | --- |
| Commune | Usually receives the application and assesses local integration. Some communes interview applicants. |
| Canton | Checks cantonal requirements, including a minimum residence of two to five years in the canton depending on cantonal law. |
| Confederation (SEM) | Issues the federal naturalisation permit once the formal and material requirements are met. The canton then takes the final decision. |

Because cantonal and communal rules differ, a move between cantons can delay your application. We check this before you relocate.

## Coming from outside the EU? Start with the right permit

If you are a national of a country outside the EU/EFTA — the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada or elsewhere — the long road to naturalisation starts with immigration. Your first permit (L or B), your route to the C permit and any gaps in residence all affect when you can apply. See [Swiss residence & visa strategy](https://juliobvero.com/services/swiss-visa-residence-immigration-strategy?hsLang=en).

- Keep a permit-by-permit record of every period of residence
- Avoid long absences that break continuity in the years before filing
- Start language certification early
- Check whether a faster route applies, such as [marriage to a Swiss citizen](https://juliobvero.com/swiss-citizenship-by-marriage?hsLang=en)

## Questions about naturalisation

### Can I apply with a B permit after ten years?

No. Since 2018, a C permit is mandatory for ordinary naturalisation.

### Does having claimed social assistance matter?

Yes. Receiving social assistance in the three years before applying, without having repaid it in full, generally counts against successful integration.

### How long does the procedure take?

It varies widely between cantons and communes, and often takes more than a year. We give you a realistic timetable for your canton.
